Holistic Travel Medicine
Travel Anywhere and Stay Healthy
By: Tracy Hackett, AP, DAOM
Enjoying your vacation to the fullest with a little preventive medicine. I started my career in Chinese Medicine traveling in India. Many of my patients were fellow travelers with the expected GI problems, exacerbated by dehydration. Here are a few quick tips and travel items that will help you stay healthy to make the most of your time away from home.
My favorite general travel items:
- TCM formulas (ask me directly for a travel kit tailored for you and your family)
- Stream2Sea sunscreen (non-toxic and reef friendly)
- Aloe Vera for after-sun care
- Argan oil to protect my skin and hair from the elements
- Eco-Dent toothpowder (non-liquid, compact, long-lasting, and effective)
These are a few items that I always pack for overseas travel to remote or developing areas:
- rehydration salts
- iodine
- TCM formulas for intestinal health (consult with me on this, there are several)
- Ear plugs, eye drops, eye mask, and peppermint oil
- Homeopathic nasal spray
- Vitamin C tablets
- Gan Mao Ling for “plan cold” prevention
- Lemon-Eucalyptus-Citronella oil blend for mosquito repellent
- Bach’s Rescue Remedy for jetlag management
The benefits of natural medicine while traveling:
- Helps with cold, flu, and fever symptoms you pick up on the plane
- Control allergies with out drugs
- Natural anti-microbial support for children and adults
- Prevention of illness from travel and can be taken a week or two prior to travel
- Acute gastro-intestinal discomfort
- Easier bowel movements
- Treatment of skin lesions, rashes, and insect bites
- Sleep re-regulation for jetlag (also there are a few points on your ear lobe for jetlag as well!)
- Treats various manifestations
- Traumatic injury management such as: bruising, contusion, sprains and fractures
As you can see, most minor to moderate health issues you encounter while traveling can be easily managed by TCM herbal formulas. Set up a consultation before your next trip to see how I can help you prepare.
Dr. Hackett helped me with Giardia after returning from overseas with acupuncture and herbs. I didn't want to take Cipro because I had a bad reaction to it previously. Now my travel kit has several herbal formulas and I've never felt better no matter where I'm sent to travel. It really is preventative medicine. It works.`` - M. Brannon
