Food sensitivities are an increasingly prevalent problem over the last twenty years as food producers take more license adding chemical additives and non-nutritive ingredients into processed foods. Singling out processed foods is relevant because our bodies have evolved to recognize certain molecules as nutrients and to absorb that ‘bio-information’ through our intestinal lining then to excrete those that are not as waste. However, if the gut lining becomes too permeable, undigested food particles, microbes, wastes, and toxins can enter the blood stream. Since these particles are haven’t been digested properly, even though something may be a nutrient source, the immune system is triggered to fight against the ‘intruder’. If this occurs over time, voila, you develop food allergies with the accompanying symptoms. The symptoms can intensify and become more complex.

 

How does Leaky Gut Syndrome get started in your GI tract and what are the symptoms?

 

The lining of your gut is a dynamic, tight mesh-like structure made of proteins has a bacteria and yeast (“flora”) lining it that adapts to the contents it’s exposed to. The normal positive flora in your intestines adapt to the types of foods you consume. If your gut microbiome or a molecule integral to the lining, zonulin, is compromised by inflammation or food additive chemicals and over processed food ingredients, a disruption of normal cell function can occur in the ability of intestinal wall to maintain tight permeability. If the disruption becomes severe or the inflammation persistent enough dysfunction and disease like colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis or worse can be the result.

If the toxic additives or improperly digested food particles pass through the lining, your immune system is further triggered leading to body and joint pain, fatigue, headaches, skin problems, sleep and mood disruption. As toxins accumulate in the tissues and joints, aggravating inflammation further to the sensitive internal tissues of the gut, the body is bombarded with ingested “information” that can trigger the immune system. Stress can also wear down the body’s defenses and normal filtration processes of waste and non-nutritive molecules. All of this combined can lead to what is called a “leaky gut”. You may infer from the previous description that your gut is leaking the wrong kinds of molecules or larger food particles into the blood stream that are not broken down to the right degree so trigger the immune system. Fissures and inflamed areas can open to allow larger particles to pass through.

 

Symptoms of food sensitivities show up quickly after irritants are ingested, but can gradually worsen and intensify with repeated exposure over time. Typical symptoms that can start as intermittent then become constant include:

  • sneezing and runny nose
  • stomach pain after eating certain foods
  • gastritis, reflux, diarrhea, cramping, gas, abdominal pain
  • sudden onset of patches of very itchy skin and/or hives
  • sudden onset acne
  • recurrent mouth sores
  • genital/anal itching or irritation
  • headache or migraine
  • unusual or intense food cravings
  • fatigue, malaise, foggy headedness
  • strong body and waste odors

Other symptoms may occur as well that are not listed here. This list of symptoms may also indicate presence of or beginnings of illnesses other than food sensitivities. Oftentimes food sensitivities are precursors to severe food allergies, which can be life-threatening.

 

So what to do if you find yourself in a situation where you haven’t really developed a serious allergy but feel anxious over some of the nagging symptoms that things may not be going so well with your digestion?

  1. Clean up your diet. Cut out the usual suspects* for a couple of weeks and see how your symptoms change. Journal any symptoms that crop up after eating to track any possible patterns of food sensitivities.
  2. Drink a large glass of water in the morning that has raw apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in it. This will help clear your stomach and gently encourage your liver’s to detoxification process.
  3. Get appropriate testing done. There are some great tests available to assess allergies, nutrient absorption, GI dysfunction, and gut flora composition. Set up an appointment with a qualified healthcare provider, like myself, to help you get the right tests. But more importantly understand what the tests results mean and get a practical treatment plan to help your heal. This type of healthcare and many tests are not covered by insurance, so make sure you know about costs so you can budget accordingly.
  4. If going through extra testing doesn’t appeal to you, clinical assessment may be enough to yield the answers you need. I learned this recipe in the kitchen of the ashram where I painted a temple ceiling in Kerala, India. Mohan made delicious food everyday for dozens of people. It is my hope that I’ve done his masterful curry justice. The modifications I’ve made are in the types of vegetables, the addition of onion, and the amount of chili (!). It is difficult to find here many of the unique and flavorful vegetables easily picked up in the village markets. Most ashrams and observant Hindu households do not use garlic and onions. They are thought to congest the higher function of the mind. If you have the time, make the curry sauce portion the day before so that the spices have time to mingle and marry.

 

Ingredients:

Sauté together:

½ c. Sesame oil

1 tbs. Black mustard seeds (add these to the oil first and wait until they pop before adding the rest)

6-8 Curry leaves

1tsp. Salt

1 ½ tsp. Fresh ground black pepper

1 small sweet Onion finely chopped

2 oz. Fresh Ginger finely choppedCurry Spice

½ or 1 small Serrano chili finely chopped

 

Add to the slightly browned sauté:

2 chopped Tomatoes

2 tbs. Tomato paste

4-6 oz. Coconut cream

3 tbs. Turmeric

1 tsp. Tamarind paste

2 tsp. packed brown sugar

*2 c. vegetable broth or coconut milk (this amount is variable to your taste use more for a thinner sauce or soup)

2-3 tbs. Peas flour (this is a thickening ingredient and very important for classic texture and body)

 

Combine and add to simmer during the last 10 minutes of cooking:

1 tbs. ground Cumin

2 tbs. ground Coriander

½ tsp. ground Cardamom
1 ½ tsp. ground Cinnamon

½ tsp. ground Allspice

½ tsp. ground Nutmeg

1/8 tsp. Amchur powder

A pinch + to taste of Chili powder

 

Roast or sauté separately from curry sauce:

½ c. Zucchini diced small

½ c. Red pepper diced or julienne

½ c. Peas

1 c. Sweet potato or pumpkin (parboil in advance)

½ c. Carrot diced

1 c. Green beans

*Spinach (do not sauté, use as a bed under the curry instead of rice for paleo version, ladle piping hot curry on top large handful of spinach leaves, it will cook with heat of the sauce)

Stir prepared vegetables into curry and serve over basmati rice or bed of spinach, then garnish.

 

Toppings for garnish:

Cashews (gently dry fry)

Finely grated coconut (gently dry fry)

Fresh cilantro

 

People in Kerala are mainly vegetarian. If you prefer a heavier dish with more protein these are suggested types to use:

Paneer (Indian farmer’s cheese)

Seitan (tofu-based protein)

Chicken (stew in roasted breast and thigh into the curry for richest flavor)

Fish curry has a very different seasoning profile and fewer vegetables…more great dishes to come!

A simple way to detox your body is with a Blue-Green Algae fast.

What is it and how does it detoxify your system?

Blue-Green Algae (BGA) is a group of simple aqueous plant organisms that contain many health-giving compounds. It is also a perfect protein, so much so that the astronauts use it as their protein source in space. BGA also contains iron, B vitamins, amino acids, γ-linolenic acid (GLA), fibers, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorous, iron, pigments such as β-carotene, xanthophylls, and chlorophyll, and other bioactive compounds that encourage blood cell formation. Recent studies are showing that BGAs have antiviral, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and antibacterial properties as well as lipid-lowering effects. The inhibitory effects of BGA on hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress can contribute to the prevention of the development of CVD and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to compounds contained in BGAs that encourage healthier levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity by there action in modulating activity in the gut which also reduces inflammation. BGA helps the body recover from cardiovascular disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which are largely due to lifestyle choices. This suggests that when given proper nutritional support organ function can return to normal. Examples of how BGAs can help:

  • Allergies: Early research shows that ingesting 2000 mg of blue-green algae for 6 months relieves allergy symptoms in adults.
  • Arsenic poisoning: Early research shows that taking a combination of blue-green algae and zinc for 12 weeks reduces arsenic levels and its effects on the skin in people living in areas with high arsenic levels in the drinking water.
  • Other toxic substances like heavy metals can be excreted out of the body with BGAs in the same manner arsenic is removed. The toxins bind to the chlorella and safely leave the body through the stool.
  • BGAs are a popular treatment for people recovering from chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

 

Dosing and length of time you should take BGAs for any given condition in combination with other supplements should be determined with Dr. Hackett. She can go over your health concerns in detail, no detail is too small, to help you get better faster.

 

Things to consider before taking BGAs:

  • Immunosuppressant drugs interact with BGAs.
  • Blue-green algae may stimulate the non-specific immune system. This in turn might decrease the effectiveness of medications that suppress the immune system.
  • Phenylketonuria: The spirulina species of blue-green algae contains the chemical phenylalanine and may aggravate phenylketonuria. It would be prudent to avoid the Spirulina species blue-green algae products if you have phenylketonuria.

Women who have excess levels of estrogen have an increased risk of breast, uterine, ovarian cancers, and cervical dysplasia. Some women can also have intense and unpleasant menopausal symptoms.

Some symptoms of estrogen dominance:

  • Breast swelling and tenderness
  • Anxiety and mood swings
  • “Fuzzy thinking”
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of ambition
  • Slow metabolism
  • Water retention
  • Loss of libido
  • PMS
  • Weight gain
  • Insomnia
  • Thickening of endometrial lining, clotted menses
  • Increased risk of uterine fibroids
  • Increased incidence of ovarian cysts

Many of these symptoms are related to stagnation of qi, blood and damp against a background of qi or yang deficiency from the perspective of Chinese medicine.

 

For 25 years it was assumed by general doctors that women produced minimum amount of estrogen after menopause until research have shown different. Chinese medical textbooks states that yin becomes increasingly vacuous until a woman stops having regular periods. Before menopause women’s levels of progesterone decline, while estrogen levels remain stable or even increase. This leads to a situation where estrogen levels is high in relation to progesterone, which is referred to as estrogen dominance. The term estrogen dominance was composed by Dr. John Lee, who advocated for natural progesterone supplementation.

 

Estrogen is produced mainly in the ovaries and progesterone is produced predominantly by the corpus luteum. When the egg quality begins to decline in perimenopause, the quality of the corpus luteum also declines, leading to lower progesterone levels and relative estrogen dominance. Many perimenopausal women are periodically anovulatory, which means that estrogen goes unopposed during those cycles.

 

Another factor which become more prevalent over the last two decades is the amount of xenoestrogens we are exposed to. Xenoestrogens are found in everything from sunscreen to plastic water bottles, our water supply which contains synthetic estrogen because of the widespread use of birth control pills. Cooking with non-stick coated cookware and microwaving food in plastic containers releases xenoestrogens into our food.

 

In my practice I suggest a combination of diet and lifestyle advice along with acupuncture, herbs and supplements to help women achieve an appropriate balance between progesterone and estrogen as they head towards menopause.

 

And here’s some advice I give my patients when they ask me how they can help themselves:

 

  • Take care of your liver. It is your best defense against estrogen dominance because it’s job is to eliminate excess estrogen. Minimize your alcohol intake and, to stimulate your liver, drink water with lemon juice first thing every morning. There are a few simple supplements that you can take just a few times per week to help your liver function at its best.
  • Research endocrine-disrupting chemicals in cosmetics, processed foods, cookware, and cleaning materials and cut your exposure to xenoestrogens as much as you can. Look at labels, many chemicals in cosmetics are derived from petroleum products.
  • Get rid of your plastic containers and plastic water bottles. Plastic is a petrochemical product and in part of its degradation process, off-gasses into water and foods.  Use glass containers and ditch your microwave. Cooking your fast or processed food in the plastic containers they were frozen in is non-nutrition.

Travel Anywhere and Stay Healthy

Enjoying your vacation to the fullest with a little preventive medicine. I started my career in Chinese Medicine traveling in India. Many of my patients were fellow travelers with the expected GI problems, exacerbated by dehydration. Here are a few quick tips and travel items that will help you stay healthy to make the most of your time away from home.

 

My favorite general travel items:

After all, I am seeing sick patients almost on a daily basis during winter season. You would think that I get sick more often, but I only get only minor symptoms because I manage those symptoms early and with a heavier dosage schedule of my favorite remedies.

 

Flu & Cold Prevention

We all know that washing of the hands frequently is very important, but did you ever notice how much you touch your face and eyes during the day? This is where transmission can be immediate. Be careful about hand sanitizers that have bactericidal chemicals because that chemical also kills off the natural bacteria your skin has to prevent outside invaders. Good old soap and water are the best.

At my office, if someone has the flu, which is spread by respiratory droplets, we will disinfect the room used to see the patient before seeing the next patient. This is to protect us and the next person.

If you live with a loved one that is sick, it’s always best to sleep in a separate room, especially if they are coughing all night (unless you want to get sick as well). Of course, many times it’s hard to avoid people that are sick around us. An atomizer with essential oil of eucalyptus can help sterilize the air of viruses traveling in droplets.

 

Natural Remedies That Help Block Colds & Flu

But, my most important preventive strategies are the natural remedies I have come to depend on to stay as healthy as possible during the winter months. I’ve linked my favorite products to this message for your benefit. My favorite TCM formulas are Yin Qiao (sore throat feverishness) and Gan Mao Ling (chills, body aches) for managing the early symptoms before you get really sick. There are smaller sizes available when you click on the links.  Adding Vitamin D3 5,000 IU daily to this mix provides another boost to the immune system. I’ve discussed the many benefits of vitamin D3 over and over. This vitamin is what saved me when I had the flu last winter. Reboost 

 

Here’s the trick I use to BEAT THE FLU:

If you definitely have the flu (high fever, body aches, respiratory symptoms, cough, congestion, runny nose), then take 25,000 IU of Vitamin D3 at the first signs of fever or flu-like symptoms. Repeat this dose daily for 3 days. When I had the flu last winter, my fever broke in 12 hours using this with two other natural remedies. Can you imagine beating the flu this quickly with natural remedies? Having my own experience with it, I know these remedies are powerful when used appropriately and sourced from high-quality manufacturers (such as the ones featured here).

 

The other remedy has been shown to have activity against both Influenza A & B. Remember, during any given flu season, the circulating Influenza virus could be predominantly one or the other. In the past, if the flu vaccine missed which strain became the more predominant one during a season, this rendered the vaccine less than 50% effective. With the flu vaccine a toss-up, it’s best to have an arsenal of natural remedies with proven efficacy against the flu. What are these natural remedies?

 

And what about colds and sore throats?

Now for the day to day sore throat that may start after exposure to the common cold, I use products like oregano oil and clove oil. Oregano has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. So, it is an all-around great anti-infective. Clove oil also has anti-microbial properties. These oils are basically made by these plants as their natural antibiotics. Clove also offers the added benefit of numbing the throat. You can make it into a spray using a spray bottle and mixing with filtered water. You control the strength by the number of drops you add to the spray bottle. You can also spray clove oil in the air if you’re on an airplane to protect you from germs flying in the air (but that may seem a little paranoid to those around you).

 

Here’s to getting through cold and flu season unscathed by a big one! May you ward off most colds that come your way, and get through any that you succumb to as fast as possible.
